The Sharpening Experience
Im enjoying build 42, and overall I appreciate that different parts of a weapon have their own durabilities. However, sharpening right now is a bit cruel.
Ive been playing with axes/hatchets, so most of my experience comes from that.
With Axes, the sharpness is hard-capped to the condition of the head. While youre at high head condition, this is fine, and feels good! Yeah, you have to sharpen every now and again, but the feeling of maintaining your weapon and being rewarded with several clean kills feels good.
However, once you pass roughly the half-durability mark, this changes drastically. Because your sharpness cant be high anymore, every hit sucks more and sharpening becomes a chore. You have to do it far more frequently to prevent it from being near-useless at 0 sharpness, but you get much less benefit. It requires sharpening under 10 zombies, and towards the end, every 2 or 3. And given theres a chance sharpening could damage the head, it feels like a cruel gamble. So you risk sharpening it for some last efficacy, or end up ruining it before its last combat, or do you ditch it pre-emptively? Its a lose-lose-lose scenario that doesnt feel good, actionable, nor particularly realistic.
I understand the logic that an axe head in poor condition wont hold an edge, but this feels a bit ridiculous. I feel like I should be able to sharpen up to about half-sharpness, even if the head condition is poor.
How do you all feel? Doss this experience change with other weapons, especially long blade?
