Is the water safe to drink in PV?

I went to my doctor for a physical and said I'm visiting PV in a few months. They said I need a typhoid, yellow fever and set of rabies shots. I went ahead and got them all done now. They also said to only drink bottled water while in PV. They said to absolutely not drink anything from the tap. This includes in their words water served at restaurants. They even said to not drink alcohol if it is served in a glass that was washed in tap water. They said to only drink things that are in a sealed can or bottle from a manufacturer.
