Day 2 with 8 wk old puppy. PLEASE HELP!!!
Hi everyone!!! My partner and I have been reading through all these posts and thought we might as well ask for some advice directly!
We got an 8 week old Bernese mountain dog and brought him home yesterday. He was great on our two hour car ride home, but did throw up 15 minutes in. I think he got car sick.
Since he got him, we’ve mixed the food that his breeder gave us with some new puppy food to try and transition him since the food she was giving him isn’t available near us. So far, he has taken maybe 3 nibbles. He isn’t’ interested in treats either. Water he is doing well with, thank goodness!
We have separated our kitchen out for him because that’s the only place with hardwood floors. We have a little gate to keep him in, and put a crate in there as well because we are desperately trying to crate train him.
It was a nightmare getting him to go in the crate. He would cry and cry and refused. We finally decided to put him in there and just try and talk to him to soothe him, but nothing. It’s difficult because he isn’t eating nor is he playing with his toys, so there is NOTHING to motivate him.
I slept on the floor next to him but he still cried and cried. Finally we took him out of the crate and just let him sleep in the gated area and my partner ended up taking that shift next to him.
He won’t go in the crate at all. We moved it to the living room so he can be with us. No use. We have been putting his food and water in there, but he is only drinking the water so not making a huge difference. Toys as well. Nothing!
He also cannot go a second without us. He screams and screams. I know he is still getting used to the place, but we need to eat dinner and use the bathroom too! lol I e have resorted to him just hanging out with us on the couch where he seems to be fine. We have off the next three days and my partner has off next week, and luckily my job only requires me out of the house about 3 hours a day, and my partners job he can bring the dog with him most days during the week. But we still have to be able to get things done, and if we can’t distract him with food or toys I’m not sure how we are going to do this.
Another thing is he is having A LOT of accidents. We are taking him out every 40 minutes or 20 minutes after he drinks or right after he wakes up from a nap. He has successfully gone outside 7 times from the maybe 20 we have taken him out. Mind you, it’s about 25 degrees here and I can’t tell if he is cold and just wants to do his business inside. I know he needs to go after he wakes up, we will take him out, nothing, and the second we get back inside he will go.
Any advice on his potty training, separation, food intake and lack of playfulness would be great! We are desperate!!!
