Questions about moving from ATX to RVA
Hi! I know no city subreddit enjoys these “I’m thinking about moving to your city” posts, so I apologize in advance. But I promise I’ve used the search bar, and I have some specific questions that I wanted to get something insight on!
My partner and I are late 30s/early40s and planning to leave Austin, Texas. I’ve been in Austin for 15 years and my husband has been Texas his whole life. Richmond and Pittsburgh are the top of our lists, though two very different cities.
- Any sources for insight into safety of different schools? I’m not terribly concerns about standardized test scores, which most rankings seem to focus on… but I do want to avoid schools where there’s a lot of fights and/or violence. I see a lot of posts about “good” schools or “bad” schools, but it’s not clear if that’s due to safety concerns or funding or what.
- What do you think would be a household income range to live fairly comfortably as a family with 1-2 kids? Cost of living calculators I’ve seen put Richmond as lower CoL than Pittsburgh, but I kind of find that hard to believe? Wondering if that data is too dated.
- Are there many road rage incidents? It feels like this has gotten way worse in Austin in the last few years. Most stats I find are state level and put Virginia way ahead of Texas… but I’m curious whether that is happening more in DC suburbs vs other areas of Virginia like Richmond. There does seem to be a lot of road rage related posts in here though.
Any other random tidbits are welcome of course!
