Hot take: I completely understand why he married her.
As a reserved person myself who is not particularly emotionally expressive, being with someone like Carrie would drive me nuts, the anxiousness, the overthinking and especially the way she interprets every assertion of independence as a sign of rejection is maddening. this is not all on her of course , he was the king of mixed signals. I don’t think he ever wanted anyone to get close to him or to be in love at all. Plus the fact that she’s not the type of woman he was expected to be with. The combination this,of hating emotional intimacy and vulnerability as well as her tendency to put pressure on him, I could perfectly see why he would want go for someone that is her complete opposite, sometimes you just want peace.
Even if I was someone who was sure that I wanted that close bond and connection with someone. A lot of what Carrie does would make me rethink if a relationship with her is even possible. I’m just saying that it’s entirely possible to be crazy about one part of someone and while the other part drives you crazy.
In fact that’s my experience with Carrie as a character she is obsessive, possessive , neurotic and self-centred but there’s no one that as lively, free-spirited vivacious as her. It’s hard to let go of that once you have it. I can relate to that dilemma.
That’s the crux of it,some people in your life drive you nuts but you still can’t let go of them because life without them is "beige"and boring.
