I killed a chicken in Riverwood and everyone wants to kill me how do i stop this

I'm a new player and I just finished the tutorial. I killed a chicken right after walking into the town and now every villager wants me dead. I heard that you have to walk up to an npc and hide your weapon to surrender and ii did that right in front of some peasants but they're still attacking me what do i do
