Find evidence about Thonar - quest stuck

So somehow Thonar's wife didn't die during the attack, so now the quest is stuck. He won't talk to me, but he also won't go to sleep so I can pickpocket the journal from him. Does anyone know a console command to force an NPC to sleep? Or another way to pickpocket an NPC who won't stop walking up to me and staring at me? I would prefer not to kill Thonar's wife.
