UNOFFICIAL CODEX ENTRY – Eric Niel

Eric Niel is an Agno-Sordish politician, former Mayor of Arvory and the seventh president of the Republic of Sordland.

Eric Niel was born in 1913 in the Kingdom of Sordland to a working-class family. His father was a fisherman while his mother worked as a secretary at a law firm. Against the wishes of his father, he pursued the legal profession and received a scholarship to study law at Holsord State University. His studies were interrupted by the Wehlen Civil War and he served his mandatory military service as a private at the border outpost of Gumren, notably alongside future president Anton Rayne.

After finishing his studies, Niel became a public defender and worked to protect the legal rights of workers, refugees and ethnic minorities in Arvory. He developed a reputation for going up against large corporations that violated labour laws and, more often than not, winning.

In 1940 he became a legal assistant to newly elected USP Mayor Lileas Graf, with the two working together closely despite their disagreements on issues such as immigration. When her successes as Mayor of Arvory led President Tarquin Soll to pick her as replacement for the Mayor of Holsord, Arvory elected Culver Morrison of the NFP to replace her. In 1948 Niel campaigned against the incumbent mayor, losing by a slim margin. He was elected Mayor at the age of 39, and worked tirelessly to stabilize Arvory's economy despite the ongoing recession.

Elected for a second term, he coordinated with President Rayne to solve the housing crisis in Arvory, revitalize Agnland's fishing industry and build a highway connecting Estord, Arvory and the newly acquired Rumburgian cities. After his third term in office, Niel decided to resign as Mayor and run for MP, becoming Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development for the incoming Walda administration. After President Walda led the USP into its historic defeat in the '65 elections and brought the Grand National Assembly into a gridlock, Niel soon became the favourite to take her place as USP leader.

Criticizing President Frens Ricter of the PFJP for the way his weak leadership and inability to work with other parties to pass crucial legislation was hurting both the people of Sordland and the nation's position on the world stage, Eric Niel campaigned on a promise to put country above party, invest in underserved regions and de-escalate tensions with neighboring Agnolia. While visiting 30 different cities on the '69 election campaign trail with running mate Nia Morgna and beloved former President Anton Rayne, Eric Niel convincingly spoke to the needs of Sordland's many communities. Despite a scandal regarding secret letters between him and Graf, who had been facing imprisonment for the murder of Bernard Circas over a decade prior, Eric Niel would become Sordland's 7th president with 38% of the vote, leading the country into the new decade.

Nielism and the Shadow of Raynenomics: HSU Educational Pamphlet

Raynenomics has been an official part of the USP manifesto since 1956, though when President Rayne wrote it he never explicitly referred to it as such, instead describing it as 'Socialism with Sordish Characteristics'. Though hardline Malenyevists and anti-communists alike oppose Raynenomics, it is generally popular among the public and uncontested within the USP due to its role in the Great Sordish Economic Recovery.

Rayne represented a bold shift away from the protectionism + nationalism of Soll and the deregulation + austerity of Alphonso. On the other hand Walda represented a shift towards radical feminism (being the first female President and extending the feminist policies of Rayne further via decree), secularism (banning of creationism in schools) and anti-violence (defunding of the military, working with the Free Bludia Coalition to enact police reform).

Ricter became the first PFJP President but was both ineffectual and historically unpopular as a leader due to the gridlock which occured under his term. While he was able to pass some legislation via presidential decree and in other cases negotiate with the USP in the assembly, the former undermined his credentials as a democrat and the latter angered his pro-market base.

Eric Niel's presidency was pluralistic, maintaining adherence to the socialist principles of Raynenomics while taking a more concilliatory approach to both governance and geopolitics. As the PFJP sought to normalize relations with the capitalist bloc of Arcasia and the CPS wanted to further align with the Malenyevists of United Contana, Eric Niel argued for an independent Sordland guided by shared interests and values rather than divisive dogma or realpolitik.

Leveraging his Agno-Sordish heritage, Niel worked to balance improving relations with Agnolia and maintaining the Sordish alliance with Valgsland. Niel stated in interviews that his approach to governance was guided by his working-class background, legal experience and time as a mayor in equal measure. He argued for a constitutionalist approach to both policy-making and international disputes, hoping to cement Sordland's place on the world stage as a trustworthy mediator between nations.

Most of all, he argued against the reactionary Sordish Nationalism which be said led only to division and violence, therefore weakening the nation, and instead what he supported was Sordish Patriotism, which he described as an approach where Sordland could become greater through resolving its own internal conflicts peacefully and uniting for a common goal. This approach to handling domestic and foreign conflicts would come to be known as Nielism, summarized by the following motto which had been used as the USP campaign slogan for the '69 elections:

"Unity without assimilation, Sovereignty without isolation, Prosperity without exploitation."
