BDR Pergatory: Please Help
TLDR at bottom
I've held 4 BDR/SDR/ADR roles at 4 companies in 4 years. Partially due to my stupid decision making (jumping ship once for more competitive offer, declining AE promotion interview due to low quota attainment and morale on that team) but mostly due to RIFs and joining orgs with no BDR promotion path.
I'm aware it's embarrassing and a red flag. I know I need to be extremely selective on where I go next and wanted Reddit to weigh in on my current options. I'm tired of being in BDR purgatory and want to work at a company I actually like.
The three top options right now:
Option A- high risk/high reward: <100 employee start up, Founding BDR working directly with VP of sales to build outbound workflow for new product, January $80M series A with Google and Samsung investors, my #1 industry of choice, highly specialized background needed, $110k base + uncapped commission, amazing proven product market fit, they have a 100% closed won conversion once decision maker has seen the product, 10 sales in first month with goal to scale to 100 by EOY. I've done this in a past role in the same industry but as the 3rd BDR hire. Major hurdle is getting to DMs in this industry more than any other I've worked. High likelihood of exit in next 2-3 years, definitely no structure or formal promotion path as a start up, VP does not come from traditional tech sales background but has said he has a history of advancing careers for past employees at early stage startups and multiple exits (I verified both on LI)
Option B - More stability but questionable OTE: Established company with two 6-person BDR teams, backfilling for recently promoted BDRs. $120M series c in 2022 led by Y combinator. Only red flag is 48% quota attainment on RepVue. Waiting to hear back from current BDRs on LI about a peer interview to get their perspectives. They're very buttoned up, have shared clear documentation and FAQ on hiring process including details on structured career progression path to AE or AM. OTE is $90k (middle of pack compared to other ENT BDR roles) but base is a paycut from my last 2 positions.
Option C - take neither and keep searching for a company with no red flags. I can survive for about 3-4 months more on current savings. I've interviewed with about 6 companies (most I am not seriously considering) in my first week of searching. I want to be selective and make a good choice but don't want to be too selective and end up ass out. I feel like the more companies I go to without promotion the lower my employment stock gets.
Thoughts?
TLDR:
4 BDR roles in 4 years at 4 companies. Part my bad decision making and chasing money/comfort, part layoffs/economy. Need to be highly selective in next role. Should I take high risk/high reward Founding BDR role with excellent comp, stable company with iffy attainment but solid promotion plan, or keep searching with 3-4 months savings left in the bank.
