Am I supposed to like the main characters?

My cousin got me into the show but I stopped watching it because I couldn’t get what other people liked about it. It seems like I’m supposed to like the characters and relate to them but I don’t. Other people whose opinions I trust talk about him being good because he did what needed to be done and gave back to his community. I just can’t relate to that thinking. For context the cartel is my point of reference for this kind of stuff and I’ve never envied or thought highly of them. What am I missing? I know the show is good but it feels like there’s something I can’t wrap my head around? Am I watching it wrong?
