Cookie Butter Ice Cream Review--5/10. Exceptionally average ice cream.
disclosure--I've never had their cookie butter on its own so I went into this blind. That being said, this ice cream was painfully average. I took a bite, shrugged, thought, "Yep, that's ice cream," then put it away to try another. It's not bad; it's inoffensive and there's nothing wrong with it, exactly. But there's also nothing special about it; nothing that stands out and makes this a memorable flavor over any other vanilla and caramel or cinnamon concoction.
Base--thid was the biggest disappointment. I'm not sure if it's supposed to be a vanilla base or something else, but it was quite flavorless. It didn't taste like vanilla or sweet cream or anything; it just tasted like generic ice cream. It was more of a texture vehicle for the mix-ins than anything to be enjoyed on its own, which is unfortunate because the ice cream isn't real heavy on the mix-ins. And it needed to be
Cookie pieces--these were okay. They tasted kind of looked those rock hard iced oatmeal cookies your grandma would give you when you came over and they didn't even have raisins in them, except these have a lot more moisture. I'm not quite sure why these are in here; something else would have been a better choice. Or s few somethings. A caramel ribbon alongside these bits, at least, would have done wonders. Their flavor isn't necessarily out of place with the cookie butter, but it's a different kind of cookie flavor and something a little more distinct would have helped this flavor pop.
Cookie butter--it was fine? Unless it's all tucked away at the bottom, there really isn't very much at all in the tub. What few bits I got I certainly enjoyed, but I was frankly a little disappointed. The way people rave about it, I was expecting to have my socks knocked off and that didn't happen. It was good but not great and as the feature flavor, the amount of it was underwhelming if not outright disappointing.
Overall if you like their cookie butter, I'm sure you'd like this, although you might want to add a little bit more from your own stash in. I'd recommend this as filling for an ice cream sandwich or cookie over on its on, or as the base flavor in a sundae. On its own, it's nothing special and nothing to write home about it. I can't tell if it'd be better with real vanilla ice cream, or if that'd clash with and overpower the mix-ins. Not a winner for me, but there's nothing outright bad about it so it gets a 5. And the price for the size was decent as well; at either $4.99 or $5.99 for a quart. Though the low cost should have given me an early clue about the mediocre flavor.
