Could we form a union?

I know we are independent contractors... Does that preclude us from forming a Driver's Union to try to bargain for better pay/treatment? I can't really find any solid answers online.

Like, the shit we are experiencing now as drivers IS exactly what unions were created to combat. If Uber has no drivers, Uber has no Uber. It would benefit every single driver to unionize.
