LGBTQ+ Moving Guide to Upstate

Hi everyone! In light of recent events, I have some LGBTQ+ friends in other states interested in NY as an official sanctuary state. They've asked me to send them some resources about moving upstate as the city is too expensive, and I thought a guide for folks might be a productive way to manage my emotions right now. I have the basic cities down, some financial information, some areas to avoid, housing tips, and attractions. With that in mind, what might you include in something like that? And do you know anyone who might be interested in helping out?

Edit: Holy shit, that's a lot more comments than I thought would happen. Thank you so much to everyone, this thread itself is a great resource to send to them. I have a basic guide here, but this thread is what I'm going to be directing most folks to. I've lived out in the NY sticks my whole life, so it's immensely valuable to hear perspectives from people across the state. Let me know what else to include, including slang. Thank you all so much, and stay safe out there.
