Applying for Statistics Master/PhD

I am in 2b statistics with coop. would it be a good choice to drop coop and focus more on the academic and GPA. If I take less than 5 courses each term (meaning that having more than 8 terms in total), does it have a negative impact on applying to a top university's statistics master/direct-entry PhD program?
