Worst Shrek Take Ever

I'm happy for problematic films to be reevaluated but am I the only one who thinks Bron Lewis' take on Shrek was bizarre?

She said it was racist because all the jokes are about the character with a "black voice" - Not all the jokes are about Donkey - Eddie Murphy doing his normal voice for an animated character doesn't somehow make that character racist - Would she prefer films to just not use black voice actors? - Are all the jokes about Shrek xenophobic because of his Scottish accent? Are all the jokes about Puss in Boots also racist because of his accent?

She said it was sexist because Fiona is forced to change to be with Shrek - Fiona chooses to be with Shrek rather than a man who only values her looks and status - Fiona chooses to remain an Ogre at the end of Shrek 2 - Fiona making her own decisions and kicking ass makes her a pretty feminist character especially considering the first film is over 20 years old - The films are criticing sexist stereotypes of traditional fairytale princesses, not adding to them - Shrek also changes to be with Fiona e.g. becoming a royal and a father - Everyone changes in a relationship, especially someone who has been in a tower their whole life - Change is actually a healthy thing that shows growth and maturity

She said Dragon being promiscuous is played for laughs and she is Donkey's slave - Dragon is with one creature in the entire series and that relationship is clearly romantic as well as sexual - The humour in these scenes come from the absurdity of a Donkey and Dragon being together or Donkey's initial awkwardness - She is literally freed and chooses to stay with Donkey and their family

She then made a really muddled point about class and questioned whether Donkey was Shrek's slave - The films are very much on the side of the "working class" fairytale creatures and the villains are those of high status who want to opress them (a Lord, a Prince etc.) - Shrek and Donkey are friends, the friendship was literally initiated by Donkey. Friends like hanging out and helping each other, it doesn't make someone a 'slave'.

Personally I think all her problems come from assumptions far more problematic than the films. Assuming people are laughing at a black voice or a promiscuous Dragon when that is really not the case. Obviously it doesn't really matter but it would have been nice to see some pushback against a really weird opinion about a fun series of films with some actually pretty mature themes e.g. appreciating that beauty is far more than skin deep, overcoming self hatred, appreciating what you have in your life and not wishing for something else etc.

What do you think m8s?
