Pre-2005 children’s book involving a wizard and a cave of gold/diamonds

If I remember correctly, it had a white cover and ended on a cliffhanger. Not sure if the wizard was a main character, just remember that there was a wizard. Read this book as a child in Wales some time before 2005.
