As TooSketchy said, it's employee vs independent contractor. As a 1099 you are responsible for paying your own taxes, insurances (except liability, usually thats covered but health and disability are not), and retirement accounts etc. However, that also means you have greater control over those things and how your money is spent. You are paid more as a 1099 because of you're responsible for your own stuff. If you happen to have a spouse that works and can add you onto their health insurance, its usually cheaper than buying your own. If you set up an LLC as your company and are paid through that, it can help with taxes and you get the benefit of certain write offs for work related spending. Theres an entire rabbit hole to go down for that.
