Social Anxiety is a mental illness characterised by distress in social situations which cause impaired functioning in daily life. Distress is triggered by perceived or actual scrutiny from others. Socially anxious people may be shy/introverted, but shy/introverted people do not necessarily have Social Anxiety Please see wiki (link below) for diagnostic criteria
